The Big Canberra Bike Ride is now even more inclusive

With the addition of the National Paracycling Road Series, the Big Canberra Bike Ride is set to become Canberra's most inclusive mass-participation event.

The National Paracycling Road Series will be part of the event weekend on March 4 and 5.

Paralympian and Pedal Power ACT Ambassador Sue Powell is one of the event organisers.

"We have people riding handcycles, tricycles, tandems and single bikes," said Sue.

"It's great that members of the public coming along for the Big Canberra Bike Ride will get to witness racing at this elite and club level, while also taking part in an event that supports safe cycling for everyone."

The Big Canberra Bike Ride aims to raise awareness of safe cycling in the ACT. All funds raised by participants go to the Amy Gillett Foundation, a charity with one purpose - reducing the incidence of death and injury of bike riders.

"We're delighted to be welcoming elite paracyclists to the nation's capital for the Big Canberra Bike Ride Paracycling Invitational," said Pedal Power ACT Executive Officer John Armstrong.

"It's exciting that we can make the Big Canberra Bike Ride accessible to everyone - this year even more so with the inclusion of a paracycling event."

The Invitational is Round 2 of the National Paracycling Road Series and will comprise a criterium at Stromlo Forest Park on March 4, and a road time trial on Parkes Way on March 5 as part of the Big Canberra Bike Ride 2017.

BCBR does O-Week

As a university town with students who come from all over Australia and the world, Canberra should have one of the highest bike-riding populations of any city. Riding a bike for transport is cheap, easy and introduces a level of freedom that cars and public transport just can’t match.

This year we’re offering students at Canberra's tertiary institutions heavily reduced rates on registration for the Big Canberra Bike Ride 2017 – we want to see more people on bikes, and participating in an event is one of the most fun ways to encourage people to ride.

We’ll be offering the below prices exclusively for students during O Week – and for a week either side, just to make sure everyone gets the chance to access the promotion after the excitement of orientation.

The BCBR O-Week promotion will run from 5 February until 19 February, and university students will be able to access the below prices by entering their student numbers into the promo code field on the registration form between these dates.

120km riders will start with the sun

On March 5 the sun will rise at 6.54am.

Participants undertaking the 120km route will start the Big Canberra Bike Ride minutes later, leaving Rond Terrace at 7am.

We had initially planned for the 120km ride to start earlier. The start time has now been pushed back half an hour for safety's sake - this means no requirement for bike lights, and no riding in the dark. And an extra half hour for coffee.

68km riders will still leave Rond Terrace at 7:30am.

Big Canberra Bike Ride Event Hub at Rond Terrace

Pedal Power ACT supports the Amy Gillett Foundation in their aim to create a safer bike riding environment in Australia, and part of that is running the safest events possible.

The BCBR17 team had planned for the Big Canberra Bike Ride Event Hub to be located in Glebe Park in 2017.

We have been working with Transport Canberra and City Services to find a safe way to make this happen, but unfortunately there is no way to make it safe enough for participants.

As a result of our concerns, we have made the decision to move the Big Canberra Bike Ride back to the fantastic original BCBR location, Rond Terrace.

Many participants from previous Big Canberra Bike Rides will be overjoyed to hear this news, with Rond Terrace being a popular event location in the heart of Canberra.

The Big Canberra Bike Ride team is very happy with our decision about moving back to Rond Terrace. Our top priority is to run a safe and enjoyable event, and we will do everything in our power to make sure bike riders remain safe on ACT roads.
